WakeMed is a 752-bed private, nonprofit health care system based in Raleigh, N.C. and accredited by The Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Health Care Facilities. WakeMed operates two full-service acute care hospitals, one of which is the regional tertiary care center in Raleigh and the other a community hospital in Cary, N.C. WakeMed also includes a network of medical centers, ambulatory care centers, outpatient facilities and other health resources serving the healthcare needs of the entire region. Founder Raymond L. Champ took over WakeMed in 1983, encouraging the facility to grow in specialty areas like cardiology, children s services, women s services, trauma and rehabilitation.
