- Wrongful DeathLewis & Roberts represented the widow of a commercial truck mechanic who was killed when an improperly mounted and mismatched split-ring wheel suddenly exploded while he was working on the tire. The split-ring wheel was over 30 years old and had been installed on a used school bus that was sold without being properly inspected. We sued the company that sold the used bus. The bus company claimed that the mismatched split-ring wheel was not detectable during an inspection. The defendant offered only $150,000 prior to trial. Jim Roberts tried the case to a jury verdict in Johnston County. The jury returned a verdict in favor of our client for $2,000,000 – one of the largest wrongful death verdicts ever in Johnston County.
- Sex CrimesA horrible set of facts forced a local school board to pay $500,000 in a pre-suit settlement of a student-on-student sexual assault and abuse incident. The case involved a middle school student who forced a classmate to engage in a sexual act. The school's principal was aware physical and verbal abuse was occurring between the students, but allowed the students to become unsupervised. The assault occurred after a meeting with the students in the principal's office. The students were allowed to return to the classroom when by themselves when the incident occurred.
- FraudIt is alleged that the Fund’s investment claims were false. For instance, it is alleged that the Fund could not demonstrate its ownership of many of the investments, and that it could not demonstrate that the investments were profitable as claimed. The hedge fund manager pled guilty to securities fraud in 2012, and he is currently serving a federal prison term.
- MurderIn still another case, we represented the victims and families of six Iraqi citizens killed and injured by Blackwater guards in Nisur Square, Baghdad, Iraq on September 16, 2007. Four of the involved Blackwater guards were eventually found guilty of various murder, manslaughter and weapons charges for their actions. One of our clients was the family of Ali Kinani, a nine year old boy shot in the head and killed while sitting in the backseat of his father’s car. The case was fiercely litigated in two state court matters, the Federal Court in Raleigh and the Federal Court of Appeals in Richmond, Virginia. The case settled for a confidential amount for all of our clients. Our case was reported nationally by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, The Nation, Democracy Now, and on national television news in Germany and France. A

- Eminent Domain
- Landlord-Tenant Disputes
- Personal InjuryWhen customers purchase nitrous oxide from the defendant, they were required to sign certain terms and conditions of sale which purported to release the defendant from liability in the event of death or serious personal injury.
- Medical MalpracticeWhen we reviewed the medical records, we learned that during the surgery, our client experienced excessive bleeding in her right eye that could not be stopped. Repeated attempts to stop the bleeding were unsuccessful and our client's right eye filled with blood. The defendant retinal surgeon attempted to repair the eye in three subsequent surgical procedures over the next month - all without success. Our client was left with a detached retina in her right eye that made her blind. We sued the involved retinal surgeon for medical malpractice in the botched surgery - and for leaving our client blind in both eyes.
