The Department of Environmental Protection, also known as DEP, is governed by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The department is responsible for administering environmental laws and regulations. It works to protect water quality in rivers and streams, as well as reduce air pollution and promote advanced energy technologies. The Department of Environmental Protection also supports community renewal and revitalization programs. The department manages a waste, air and radiation management office that responds to requests for information from the general public and local government agencies. In addition, its water management office plans, directs and coordinates programs associated with the protection of water resources.
