General Info

Established in 1938, the Portsmouth Metropolitan Housing Authority was created by a group of concerned Portsmouth, Ohio, residents who came together to address the lack of adequate housing caused by the devastating winter floods of 1937. With cooperation from city officials and financial support from the federal government, the PMHA first opened its residential doors to the public in 1941, providing decent, safe and sanitary housing to people on limited incomes. It served the public well in its early years and continues to do the same today. The housing authority experiences an annual 98.5 percent occupancy rate. The PMHA owns, maintains and rents nearly 900 units of public housing, employs a full-time staff of 50 members and annually generates more than $4 million into the local economy. Its housing communities include Wayne Hills, Farley Square, Lett Terrace, Miller Manor and Portsmouth Homes. Its high-rise buildings for senior citizens and adults with disabilities include the Alexandria House, Hudson House and Cliffside House. The Portsmouth Metropolitan Housing Authority is located in Portsmouth.
