  DHEA is a chemical precursor to human sex hormones. Levels are highest when we're 20 to 25 years old, and decline by 80-90% by the time we're 75. When DHEA was first discovered, it was hailed as the fountain of youth. This claim appears to be a bit overblown, but optimal DHEA levels have been associated with increased metabolism and leaner body mass, improved energy and sex drive, better memory, and mental alertness. It has also demonstrated benefit in a number of chronic health problems such as lupus, depression, and chronic fatigue. The caveat with DHEA is that it converts to testosterone and estrogen, and it's difficult to control which of these hormones it converts to. More importantly, without knowing you have reduced levels of sex hormones, it is not wise to elevate them since high levels of estrogen and testosterone are both associated with a number of serious health problems. These concerns deflated some of DHEA's potential, until another form of this hormone was discovered - 7-Keto DHEA. 7-Keto is a safer form of DHEA: it provides many of DHEA's benefits, specifically with regard to metabolism and fat burning, but does not convert to sex hormones.
