- Medical Weight LossDieters do not have to be on a low-fat, low-carb diet to get the weight loss benefits. But it does work if you try to change your eating habits and make healthier choices. All we really have to lose is calories, and when we eat a lot of those, we just gain even more weight. What does it mean to be "overweight"? If your body stores fewer calories as fat than it burns through, you're a healthy weight. Being overweight is having too many extra calories compared to the amount your body can burn up and still stay fit. To determine how to change your diet to lose weight, you need to find out how many calories your body can burn before you start to get fatter. The calorie-burning rate is called your basal metabolic rate or BMR. This is based on your age and sex. So when you get older, you burn less calories at rest. But you can lose weight at the same time. The National Weight Control Registry is a group of people who have kept off at least 30 pounds for a year or more, and they tell us that diet and exercise are what helped them lose weight. How fast does it take to lose weight? The average dieter lost over two pounds a week for the first three months. Some people even lost more.
