Porterville Developmental Center is located southeast of the city of Porterville, Calif., off Highway 190 in the Sierra foothills of Tulare County. Porterville occupies in excess of 665 acres and more than 100 buildings. Porterville s social programs work towards developing and improving social, cognitive, vocational and leisure skills. It also teaches sensory development to enable individuals to expand and personally enhance their lives. Habilitation and social development programs assist individuals in developing critical life skills necessary for successful transition into a community. Porterville also provides training in personal management, community awareness and independent living. Adult physical and social development programs provide individuals with a well-rounded developmental program in addition to basic nursing and physical health care. The center admitted its first residents on June 3, 1953.
