Public Assistance is a unit that provides financial assistance services to low-income families and children. The unit administers Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), which is a federal program that provides monetary aid and work opportunities for families with dependent children. It also has programs available to help senior citizens and individuals with disabilities. Public Assistance is a unit of the Rockland County Department of Social Services, which provides individual protection, day care and crisis intervention services. Located in Pomona, N.Y., the department enforces child support by establishing paternity and collecting, distributing and enforcing support orders. In addition, it offers the Food Stamp Program, which includes financial assistance services for low-income individuals and families to purchase food. The Rockland County Department of Social Services provides transportation, energy assistance and volunteering services.
