I dropped my car off at Pep Boys for a state inspection. The car was well taken care of and I didnt expect any issues. An hour later Ricky from Pep Boys called to tell me that the "check engine" light came on and it will cost me $90 to diagnose it. I asked Ricky what is the error code and all I got was a sleazy response that I really need to pay for diagnostics. I refused but was still forced to pay ~$30 for the failed inspection. Long story short, there was nothing wrong with the car. It passed the inspection at another place without issues and 2000 miles later the "check engine" light has not come back on. I can't help but think that Pep Boys mechanics triggered the error code somehow. Such attempts to coerce customers into paying for fixing nonexistent problems are disgusting. Even though my financial loss in this interaction was small (the cost of the failed inspection), I will stay away from Pep Boys from now on and will advise anyone I know to do the same.

I came in to replace a flat tire. Total cost was only $26.00, including the tire and labor. They checked to see if there was a warranty on the tire, which there was.Plus, they had a lot of neat stuff in their store.
I put my car in for a new headlight and inspection and they wanted me to spend an additional $100 to replace a rear light housing that worked perfectly fine when I brought the car to them. I refused to pay that much for something that already worked, and they responded by saying that they will not allow me to pass the inspection unless I purchased it. Stay Away! Scam Artists at work
Wanted hitch and wiring for pop up camper. Told them THREE times we needed a 6 prong round. They installed a 4-flat. Stood there for 30 minutes while they tried to find and configure an adpater. Told us to call the next day. We subsequently found out that the wiring package was completely wrong. Rob in "customer service" was extremely rude, his solution was some sort of adapter contraption and insisted the wiring was right. Told me right off the bat that my money would not be refunded. The wiring cost was $60, and now I have to somewhere else and pay $120 to get it fixed. I will NEVER go to Pep Boys again, not even for a wiper blade.
I brought my car in because it was not starting and they immediately tested the battery. The man at the desk told me it wasn't working but the tech came out after that and said that after he cleaned the corrosion off of the battery terminals, it worked fine. However, the salesman insisted that my battery was no good and basically ignored the technician, telling me I needed a new battery. Be careful, they are sneaky.
they replaced battery which worked fine?
We take our cars to this particular Pep Boys and have been very satisfied with the service we have received. We also purchase our tires from them and have been very pleased with them. They are very honest.
