- Retaining WallsOrganized around a simple concept with distinctive areas for daytime and nighttime functions, the Riverwalk House sits overlooking the banks of the Haw River. Particularly important to the owners was the experience of arrival, preferring that views of the river be revealed only after entering the home. The house is therefore tucked into the hillside with a long concrete retaining wall that frames the entry, minimizing the appearance of the house upon approach. The two wings of the house each feature a butterfly roof, allowing daylight into each space and expansive views to the river, with a low-slung entry foyer forming a connector between the two.
- Window Installation/Replacement
- SidingLocal reclaimed materials were incorporated into the exterior siding and roofing to maintain the historic character and charm of the Barn. Sleek windows and patio doors matching the Cabin were used to maximize daylighting and provide a connection with the rolling pasture surrounding the Barn.
- Residential Roof RepairThe addition was carefully sited to both overlook the expansive garden and provide the opportunity to feel aloft in the trees. The addition nearly doubles the size of the existing house and adds a master suite and living room, plus laundry room and kids’ romper room in the walk-out basement. In fashion with the original house, the new wing was clad in traditional cedar shake with cedar trim. As an accent to the cedar, metal roofing panels from a nearby barn were salvaged and applied to the portion of this building designed to host a window trellis for flowering vines.

- MasonryEngineering reports confirmed the masonry walls remained structurally sound, and a stabilization effort was immediately implemented. This reconstruction effort included restoring the courtroom, adding a history museum space, and designing administration areas. The result is a completely modernized building that embodies the character and spirit of the original construction. The structure again stands as the symbolic anchor for downtown Pittsboro and the Chatham County government.
