Established in 1997, the University City District is a nonprofit organization that works to increase public safety, assist commercial and rental property owners and promote University City s attractions and amenities. The organization is governed by a 25-member board and is located in Philadelphia. The University City District maintains a work force of more than 40 employees. The organization is funded by various businesses, residents and institutions. Additionally, it provides regional marketing services for restaurants and cultural venues. The University City District also designs, produces and distributes signs and banners. The organization undertakes lighting, landscaping, streetscape and transportation projects. The University City District offers public space maintenance services, such as sidewalk cleaning and graffiti removal.
