The Ottawa Police Department aims at preserving a peaceful and safe environment through the enforcement of local, state and federal laws. The department supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the use of illegal drugs, membership in gangs and violent behavior. It has a school resource officer who maintains liaisons with schools. The Ottawa Police Department maintains a communication center that offers fire-related, police protection and medical services. The department employs a staff of more 25 sworn officers and volunteers. It operates a patrol division and detective, domestic violence and drug enforcement units. Located in Ottawa, Kan., the department supports a reserve police officer program.
