- Child SupportThis feels like a personal subject matter. I was a single mother with a 3-year old son when I was admitted into Seattle University School of Law. My parents didn’t have money. I paid for my education working and taking out student loans. My ex-husband never paid child-support. I grew up in Calexico, California, a very small border town that neighbors Mexicali, Mexico. Almost 97% of the community is Mexican. The other 3% is White or Chinese. Sitting so close to the border at least 50% of the entering kindergarten class in Calexico (yes, it’s the U.S.) doesn’t speak English. I often questioned the quality of my education. We were not rich, and a private school was never an option. The teachers taught to the-average-mean of the classroom. Both my parents have passed away, my dad was White and my mother was Mexican. Being half-white, growing up in Calexico, I WAS the minority. I wasn’t Mexican enough because my dad white. When I moved to Washington, I was different because I wasn’t White enough. I learned a long time ago

- Premises LiabilityI fell, do I have a claim? It’s the “slip and fall” cases that sometimes give attorneys a bad rap. NO, just because you fell doesn’t mean you have a case. If you tripped on your own two feet, you don’t have a case. However, if you fell in a pot hole filled with water, in a dark parking lot, and broke your ankle, you might have a case. Why? Because the property owner or business has a duty to make sure they warn you of the hole, or repair the hole as soon as it’s discovered so that no one is injured. “Slip and Fall” cases are very fact specific. Clearly the business or property owner doesn’t have a duty to isolate every person from harm. But if there is a dangerous condition on their property that they knew about or should have known about AND the property owner or business failed to warn, repair or fix the condition, you could have a case.
- Property DamageI recommend that my clients call the police every time. Why? Because most people are nervous, stressed and will forget to gather all the necessary information. The police are required to respond to a collision scene if you are injured or there is more than $1,000 in property damage. If the police refuse to come the collision scene (No injury or less than $1,000 in property damage) or they are too busy responding to life and death crimes. You don’t have to wait for the police, but you should do the following and file your own police report. Here is the link. https://fortress.wa.gov/wsp/wrecr/OMVCR/
- Personal InjuryWhen deciding to hire an attorney you should ask them about their experience. You could ask how long they have been practicing law. How many cases like yours have they personally handled. A paralegal or legal assistant who has 20 years of experience handling personal injury claims may know a lot about that particular area of the law but are not licensed to practice law.
- Medical MalpracticeFor medical malpractice cases or other complex litigation cases, the costs can exceed $200,000 and thousands of hours of time. Most of these attorneys work in teams, sometimes 5 to 10 attorneys assist on a case. Friends who only take these complex litigation matters when millions of dollars are at stake, the risk is higher and so is the cost to pursue these cases.
