The Ocean City Police Department, founded in 1898, provides a range of law enforcement services and is located in Ocean City, Md. Its bike unit was established in 1993 through federal funding and has a team of bike officers that supplements patrol in a variety of ways, including criminal and traffic enforcement, crowd and traffic control, and special event and boardwalk patrol. The department s K-9 team performs several tasks, such as tracking, building searches, evidence recovery, tactical mission support, search and rescue operations, handler protection and narcotic odor detection. Its traffic safety unit promotes traffic safety through public education; reduces motor vehicle collisions through the development and implementation of selective enforcement programs; and investigates fatal and serious motor vehicle collision cases. The Ocean City Police Department offers a bicycle registration program for the residents of Ocean City, Md., which encourages bicycle riders to register their bicycles as a deterrent to crime.
