General Info
Dr. Milbrandt is a critical care medicine specialist with over 15 years of experience providing care to the sickest of hospitalized patients, including those with severe depression. He first became interested in ketamine for the treatment of depression while caring for a patient who had been in the intensive care unit for weeks. The patient had become terribly depressed. Because of his critical illness, he could take no medicines by mouth. All available antidepressants are given by mouth! After speaking the chair of the state psychiatric association, Dr. Milbrandt learned that ketamine was being used in a series of short infusions to help patients with treatment-resistant depression. The treatment was too new at the time to benefit this particular patient, but the experience opened his mind to new approaches for treating depression. In his own words: I have personally struggled with depression much of my adult life. I know just how painful and debilitating this disease can be, not only for those suffering from it but for their loved ones as well. I have been fortunate to achieve good control with traditional pharmaceuticals, but at least 20% of depressed patients do not. Ketamine infusion therapy offers hope for treatment-resistant patients. I am thrilled to be able to offer this option locally for Ocala and surrounding areas.
