Founded in 1871, Smith College is one of largest liberal arts institutions for women in the United States. It serves more than 2,500 students from over 45 U.S. states and nearly 70 countries. The college offers various academic programs that include instruction in anthropology, architecture, chemistry, engineering, literature, history, sociology, neuroscience, philosophy, American studies and mathematics. Smith College also provides foreign language classes in Spanish, French, Italian, German and Latin. It offers dance, art and music courses. In addition, the college provides degree programs in the areas of teaching, playwriting and social work. Its athletic activities include squash, swimming, tennis, hockey, softball, soccer, volleyball and basketball. Smith College operates a chorus, orchestra, and business, riding and fencing clubs.
