Located in North Scituate, R.I., the Detective Bureau is a part of the Rhode Island State Police Department. The bureau operates through various units, such as lottery investigations, financial crimes, narcotics, area detectives, computer crimes, intelligence, violent fugitive task force, criminal identification, and auto theft and insurance fraud. The Detective Bureau s staff includes several detectives, civilian investigators, financial auditors, confidential transcribers and office managers. Its intelligence unit is responsible for managing and maintaining confidential informants, maintaining a criminal intelligence file, tracking and identifying members of organized crime, and maintaining and gathering information of various gangs. In addition, the unit organizes informational seminars for other law enforcement agencies and assists local, state and federal agencies with investigations. It conducts electronic sweeps and researches modern technical equipment.
