I was in the Work Release Program at the Norco Animal Shelter. On Tuesday, March 25th, 2014 I was going through the big dog kennels and I saw a mouse in one of the cages. I thought it was dead so I went to pick it up so the dog would not eat it. When I got closer it didn't move, but when I touched it, it moved and I realized it was a baby rat whose eyes weren't even open yet. I asked one of the other WRP people if it was a rat, because there are a lot of squirrels in the area. And he told me, "Yeah, we just killed a bunch of those. You need to kill it. Hit it with a rock. Or drown it." I said, "No, I'm not killing it." He told me I was crazy and to give it back to the dogs to let them have at it. Basically, the black guy who works the animal control who picks up strays took the rat from the hole I put it in and squeezed it to death in his hands. If the WRP person suggested killing the rat inhumanely, how do you think the workers kill them? This guy killed the rat in his hand.
