The Newburyport Police Department is a state-accredited law enforcement agency that provides services for the safety and welfare of the public. It supports Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.), which is an international education program that seeks to prevent the use of illegal drugs, membership in gangs and violent behavior. The department has a domestic abuse unit that provides immediate crisis intervention for victims of domestic violence. It operates a bicycle patrol unit that provides uniformed patrol, crime prevention, emergency incident response, accident investigation and traffic law enforcement services.
