HUD was founded in 1965 as a cabinet-level agency by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. It offers a range of housing solutions and services that includes buying, selling and renting of residential properties. The agency works for creating affordable housing opportunities for low-income groups. It also provides various care and support services to homeless individuals, senior citizens and people suffering with disabilities and AIDS. The agency promotes economic and community development, as well as operates a law enforcement center. HUD additionally offers several home buying programs. In addition, it offers grants for a variety of housing projects through the Office of Departmental Grants Management and Oversight. HUD is located in Newark, N.J.
