- Sleep DisordersOSA is a very common sleep disorder affecting nearly 29 million Americans. Of that population, 80 percent are unaware that they have the condition. When asleep, a patient suffering from OSA tries to breathe, but is unable to get oxygen into their lungs due to a blockage of their airway. This can cause the patient to snore, gasp for breath and even suddenly wake up.
- GlaucomaChildren can be afflicted by many eye diseases. They may be born with or may develop cataracts, glaucoma, retinal and orbital tumors, or other problems. More commonly, children may need glasses to see more clearly or intervention for misaligned eyes ( strabismus ) or poor visual development in one eye ( amblyopia ). The management of eye problems in children requires special knowledge and skills. Even before a child can speak, pediatric ophthalmologists can tell what a child sees, if he or she needs eyeglasses or contact lenses, and if any problems exist with the eyes. Children are not miniature adults, and their eye problems require diagnostic and treatment methods that are usually different from those used in the older age group.

- Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)Hold your breath for as long as you can. Now hold it for a few more seconds. Did you feel what happened when you finally allowed yourself to breathe? Your body jumped at the chance to take in oxygen because it knew something was wrong. Something similar happens to you during an obstructive event: Your heart rate shoots up, your blood pressure rises and your body goes into a “fight-or-flight” response. Over time this pattern can take a toll on your health. If left untreated, OSA can increase your chances of contracting other diseases and medical conditions—or worsen your symptoms if you already have them. These conditions include diabetes, obesity, hypertension, dementia, depression, ADHD and even heart failure. The good news is that when patients seek treatment for their OSA, many of them see improvements in these other conditions.

- Eyelid SurgeryThere are many techniques for eyelid surgery, and the procedure is customized to the individual. In general, these techniques involve the removal or tightening of the skin, fat, and muscle of the eyelids. A common reason to get upper eyelid surgery is excess or sagging skin that can cover the edge of the eyelid, touch the eyelashes, impair vision, or interfere with makeup application. Common reasons to get lower eyelid surgery include puffiness, eyebags, and dark undereye circles. Wrinkling and fine lines can affect both the upper and lower eyelids.
- LiposuctionAt my practice, a tummy tuck is an outpatient procedure that usually takes two to three hours. I include a free liposuction of the flanks with all tummy tucks, which further improves the appearance of the abdominal region. Patients go home the same day. Recovery time depends upon the patient’s overall health before the procedure. For all tummy tucks, I use a long-acting, numbing pain medication, EXPAREL, or an on-Q pain pump. This significantly improves postoperative pain control—we are one of the few practices that use this exclusively. I want my patients to walk around the same day of the surgery, and most patients are back to doing light exercise after three weeks. The main limitation is a restriction on heavy lifting for approximately two months after the procedure. I work very closely with lymphatic massage therapists to address postoperative swelling and improve contour of the abdomen after surgery.

- BlepharoplastyEyelid surgery, a.k.a. blepharoplasty, is a procedure that can improve eyelid appearance, eyelid function, or both. It can be performed on the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both. It is an outpatient procedure and can be performed under local anesthesia or IV sedation. It is generally considered a cosmetic procedure, but in some cases is medically beneficial and covered under insurance with visual field studies and photos.
- AbdominoplastyA tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes extra fat and skin from the abdominal region. A tummy tuck can address abdominal laxity due to weight gain/loss or previous pregnancy, where the skin had to grow and stretch and is hard to reduce later on. When the loose skin and fatty deposits are removed, the surrounding muscles are tightened, resulting in a more flattened and contoured appearance.
