- Medical Weight LossA: COVID-19 is primarily spread through respiratory droplets from direct contact with a person while they are infectious, which means to become infected, people generally must be within six feet of someone who is contagious and come into contact with droplets when a person with a confirmed infection coughs or sneezes as well as touching objects or surfaces that were contaminated by droplets (like those from a cough or sneeze) from a person with a confirmed infection and touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. COVID-19 symptoms are similar to many other viral illnesses and include common symptoms like fever, malaise, fatigue and cough. Less common symptoms include diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, muscle aches and pains, chills, nasal congestion, sore throat, runny nose, headache, dizziness, loss of taste and smell, abdominal discomfort, decreased appetite and weight loss. Late complications include blood clots, kidney failure and long term neurocognitive deficits.
- Nutritional CounselingNutritional counseling is invaluable when striving to lead a healthier, longer life. This service includes taking a medical, and sometimes a psychological, history and establishing a customized dietary plan for each individual patient. Anyone can benefit from nutritional counseling, especially patients with food allergies or eating disorders. Ongoing nutritional counseling allows for evolving dietary guidelines. Dr. Primas believes that all nutritional needs should be met with whole foods, however, in certain cases, supplementation may be necessary based on type of diet and genetic makeup. He may recommend broad and/or targeted supplementation to help patients achieve and maintain optimal health.

- ImmunizationsThe Emporiatric Medicine and Travelers’ Wellness Center provides complete care for the international traveler. Established over two decades ago as one of the first full service international travel health centers in New York City, we are an official Yellow Fever Vaccination site and are certified to endorse the International Certificate of Vaccination. Destination-specific pre-travel consultations are customized to the needs of our patients. During the 1-hour consultation, patients learn all potential risks of their trip and are given specific instructions for contacting us if they become ill abroad. Pre-travel consultations also include immunity screening, prophylactic antibiotic, anti-diarrheal, altitude illness and anti-malaria prescriptions. All routine, required, and recommended vaccinations are available. The risks and benefits of medications and vaccinations are discussed, and all the patient’s questions are answered.
- Internal MedicineDr. Primas first realized the power of prevention when he was a resident in internal medicine. He saw that an overwhelming majority of patients were hospitalized because of behavioral and lifestyle choices that were less than optimal due to poor health literacy. This realization was further reinforced after working for many years in the inner cities of New York, Chicago and San Diego working with underserved patients who desperately needed health literacy in the food deserts they were living in. The disparities that exist in all communities need to be addressed by health education especially among young people to establish lifelong healthy behaviors to ultimately reduce the burden of the modern chronic diseases that plague all societies. He is committed to changing the current sick care system to a patient empowered well care system focused on prevention. He believes that starting at the grassroots level, beginning with individual healthcare leads to healthier families, communities and nations, ultimately leading to a healthier planet and markedly decreased healthcare burden and costs. In fact, Dr. Primas’ entire practice is based on prevention. Whether it be prevention of acute illness (including STD/STI prevention) and injury, primary and secondary prevention of chronic disease, travel related disease prevention or aging prevention, Dr. Primas is here to guide you.
