- Pediatric CareIn 1992, Dr. Juan Tapia-Mendoza founded the Pediatrics 2000 group. He was soon joined by a new generation of medical providers dedicated to working in underserved urban communities. In January of 1993, Pediatrics 2000 opened its doors at 150th Street and Broadway in West Harlem, NY: a federally designated health shortage community plagued with a high prevalence of asthma, teen pregnancy, obesity, and behavioral problems. Pediatrics 2000 introduced the concept of a private Pediatric group practice to the neighborhood and was the first open access clinic for a Medicaid eligible population in the area. It was the first clinic of its kind to treat acute asthma attacks with medicines administered via nebulizer instead of the traditional asthma injections known for its side effects and limitations.
