General Info
Dr. Mary Ruth Buchness studied the Biochemical Sciences at Harvard University‚ graduating with honors. She then completed her MD degree at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons‚ where she remained and completed her dermatology residency. Dr. Buchness was board-certified and became a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology in 1986. After residency‚ she became a member of the full-time faculty at New York University Medical School‚ where she was the Assistant Chief of Dermatology at the Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Manhattan. While at the VA Medical Center‚ Dr. Buchness published many papers on skin diseases associated with sensitivity to ultraviolet radiation and those associated with HIV infection. In 1988‚ a paper she wrote describing a novel treatment for a previously untreatable HIV-associated skin disease was published in the New England Journal of Medicine. In 1995‚ Dr. Buchness became the Chief of Dermatology at St. Vincent’s Hospital and Medical Center in Manhattan‚ where she continued her research into skin diseases associated with HIV infection. Dr. Buchness went into private practice at West Village Dermatology in 2000. In order to provide the best services and facilities for her patients, she opened a beautiful new office in Soho on June 1‚ 2009. Dr. Buchness participates‚ and has had leadership positions in many professional organizations. She is the President of the New York State Society of Dermatology and Dermatologic Surgery. She has served on the executive committee of the Advisory Board of the American Academy of Dermatology and as the chairperson of the Dermatology Section of the New York Academy of Medicine. She has served as President of the Woman’s Medical Association of New York City and of the Manhattan Metropolitan Dermatological Society. She has served on the Board of Directors of the Greater New York Dermatologic Society.
