New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Region 3 includes Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Sullivan, Ulster and Westchester counties in New York. It is a part of the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, which is also known as DEC and works to improve the quality of the environment. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has been in operation since 1970 and conserves, improves and protects New York's natural resources. It also works to prevent, abate and control water, land and air pollution. The department focuses on the enhancement of the health, safety and welfare of the public. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has more than 15 divisions and offices. The department employs a staff of up to 3,500 people.
