The Highway Department, governed by the city of North Hempstead in New York, is responsible for the maintenance and repair of roadways. It offers pavement and drainage maintenance, street sweeping, sign installation, snow removal, and ice and flood control services. The department also issues road opening permits for homeowners and contractors. The Highway Department maintains storm water catch and recharge basins and pipe systems. In addition, its highway sign shop installs and maintains traffic control signs. The department is responsible for the collecting of sand and other debris. The Highway Department also monitors weather conditions in order to prepare for storm events and weather-related emergencies. It is a part of the public works department.
