The Needham Fire Department works to protect the lives and property of residents through public education, emergency medical services, disaster preparedness, and fire suppression, prevention and inspection. It operates a communication and dispatch center that coordinates responses to various emergency and nonemergency calls. The department supports the Student Awareness of Fire Education (S.A.F.E.) program, which enables students to recognize the dangers of fire and tobacco products. The Needham Fire Department also inspects buildings and residences, issues fire permits, collects fees, and provides licenses for the storage, handling and usage of hazardous materials. It administers a vehicle maintenance program that provides maintenance of fire apparatus, automobiles and equipment. The department is located in Needham, Mass.
