In her lifetime, she will produce between four and six egg cases. Cockroaches are also very resilient; they adapt very well to different situations. Once cockroaches infest a home, they are rarely seen. Cockroaches are nocturnal and can live up to a month with little or no food. - SlugsEarwigs are brown beetle like insects with a pair of pincers at the tip of its abdomen. The name, “Earwig” comes from the mistaken belief that the insect creeps into the ears of sleeping persons. The earwig is seldom more than one inch (2.5 cm) long. A pair of many-jointed antennae projects from the insect’s large head. Most earwigs have four wings—a short, thick, upper pair; and a larger, thin, transparent rear pair that folds like a fan beneath the upper pair. However, these insects rarely fly, and some do not have wings at all. Earwigs feed mainly on crop and garden plants, but their chewing mouthparts are also adapted for eating insects, slugs, and decayed matter.
- SnailsKeep an eye out for these garden pests: squash bugs, Japanese beetles, cucumber beetles, spider mites, aphids, tomato hornworms, cabbage loopers, cats, rabbits, slugs, snails, fire ants, deer, moles, and squirrels.
- Sow BugsDuring late summer and fall and occasionally during spring and summer, millipedes and sowbugs can leave the soil and leaf litter and crawl into homes, sometimes in very large numbers. They enter through cracks in foundations, around ground-level windows, and under doors. They are commonly found in basements although they may also be found in ground-level rooms. They enter for one of two reasons. First, in the fall, millipedes and sowbugs seek protected places to overwinter. Second, excessive rainfall or ground moisture may force them out of their normal environment in the soil to areas with less moisture. Millipedes and sowbugs can also be found indoors in early spring as they emerge from cracks and crevices where they spent the winter. Sowbugs and millipedes are rarely seen indoors during winter.

- SnakesIn Massachusetts we are primarily exposed to only 1 type of Skunk; the single striped skunk. Skunks live under ground and although they are more noticeable in the summer, they do not hibernate in the winter. On the contrary, they mate in Jan-Feb and are very active nightly as long as temperatures are favorable. Young skunks are born around April to May, and begin to emerge from the den around Mid-June. A typical litter can have up to 13 kits. In the Fall, the young leave their mothers and venture out to find a territory of their own. Later in the season, around December they start to den up with others, possibly in preparation for the mating season or to keep warm. Skunks are able to climb so getting up to a porch or deck to get to food is very common. Skunks will eat just about anything from small rodents, snakes, worms, insects, grubs, carrion, and, of course, garbage, bird seed, and pet food.

Cardboard items are attractive to rodents because they tend to chew them up for use in their nests.
- MiceThe House Mouse is typically gray but the color can vary. Their body is about 3” – 4” long with their tail being of equal length. Their muzzle is pointy, their ears are large and their eyes are small and round. House mice prefer to nest in dark, quiet places, so they can go undetected and undisturbed. An area with nesting material such as paper, cotton, insulation, fabric is ideal. They are capable of entering a home through an opening as small as ¼”. They are nibblers, and will chew on just about any type of material. The best way to know if you have been infested with mice is to look for their small black, rice like, feces. You can also look for items that have been gnawed at or areas where nesting has occurred. Sexual maturity is reached in only 5-8 weeks. Female mice reproduce up to 8 times in their lifespan and can produce litters ranging from 4-7 pups. Therefore, a single female house mouse can produce up to 56 offspring annually. That spells trouble for you the homeowner.

They are gray to black, with their belly being white, gray, or black. They have large eyes and ears and a scaly tail. Roof Rats are nocturnal and have poor vision, but a very good sense of smell, taste, hearing and touch. Roof rats are so named, because they prefer nesting in upper structures, such as attics.
