General Info
Home to Hockey Hall of Famers Gordie Howe and Paul Coffey, the Carolina Hurricanes Hockey Club is a NHL team that is based in Raleigh, N.C. Uniformed in red, white and black, with a hurricane symbol, the club plays its home games in Raleigh s RBC Center. Formerly known as the New England Whalers (1972-1979), and Hartford Whalers (1979-1997), the club was a charter franchise in the maverick World Hockey Association when it was founded in 1972. When the WHA folded in 1979, the NHL absorbed four of the league s teams, including the Whalers. The team's name was modified to the 'Hartford Whalers' and a new logo and uniforms were introduced. In 1997, when the club owner was refused a new arena, he moved the team to North Carolina and renamed it the Carolina Hurricanes.
