Family Independence Agency, also known as FIA, is operated by the government of the State of Michigan. The agency, formerly known as the Department of Social Services, helps individuals and families to meet their financial, medical and social needs. It assists people in achieving self-sufficiency. The agency protects children and adults from abuse and exploitation. Family Independence Agency employs a staff of more than 13,420 people. The agency is funded by the Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services. It manages various state- and federally-funded programs. Family Independence Agency provides access to the Food Stamps Program.
