NEVER USE THIS DOCTOR! Dr. Jeffrey H. Martin and his staff seem to have absolutely no concept that their patients are human beings in very vulnerable situations that we love and trust in their hands. I called Dr. Martin and scheduled an appointment for my Dad. The day prior to his visit, I called the office to provide a history of Dads recent health issues. I spoke with nurse/assistant Bobbie, an extremely rude and unprofessional woman. She cut me off and told me, We are too busy to go over these details over the phone; you will just have to come in with your dad sir! She stated this in a very derogatory manner and abruptly hung up. I called again and explained that I had taken a lot of time off work and could lose my job. In addition, it was a 4-hour drive for me and that my sisters live in Wisconsin. I explained that my Dad would be very safe with trained EMTs in an ambulance from the Life Care Center of Copper Basin to and from Dr. Martins office. I explained that my Dad had been through a significant trauma and mentally he was in and out of it so he most likely would not be in condition to provide information. She hung up on me again. I called back on the day of the visit, before my Dad would arrive, and Bobbie picked up again and she scolded me yet again, stating, I told you to come in with your father sir! We have other patients and dont have time for this! She hung up on me yet again. This time I called back, got Bobbie but asked to speak to the supervisor. I could literally hear in Bobbies voice the pleasure she was taking in giving me such a hard time. In her mind, this was all about Bobbie, not the patient. She said in a very cocky voice, Sure, you can speak to me supervisor. I was then handed over to Renee Nicely. Renee listened to me and repeatedly apologized for Bobbies conduct. She told me that my Dad had arrived but he was being uncooperative concerning signing paperwork. I told her, this is precisely what I was trying to avoid. Hes been through too much too fast and he probably doesnt understand what you are asking of him. I told her that I am Power of Attorney and I can provide everything you need. I then learned that Dr, Martins staff was actually, negligently wheeling my Dad back to the ambulance and was going to refuse to see him. Fortunately, Renee Nicely caught them before my Dad had left the building. She had already told me he was gone but after I threatened a lawsuit, she ran to try to catch him and did. Renee stated that she did have some paperwork from Life Care Center of Copper Basin. In addition, she allowed me, using her own cell phone, allowed me to speak to my dad. He was very upset and confused but I was able to get him calmed down. Renee emailed me the consent form and I signed it, as Power of Attorney, and emailed it back to her. She stated that she would have Dr. Martin call me after my Dad had seen him.Dr. Martin called me and spoke down to me as if I were a dog (my Dad said he experienced the same); in a very similar manner as his assistant/nurse BobbieI now could see where the attitude towards clients and patients was coming from. He stated, I have no idea why you would put your Dad through all of this. There isnt anything I can do for him in his current condition. I explained that I was simply following doctors orders from a very reputable source, Erlanger Hospital. This is what I was instructed to do at this point. Dr. Martins office did not provide anything resembling quality service and healthcare. If they were so busy that they could not take my Dad and handle the matter professionally and efficiently they should have told me that. Bobbie turned a relatively simple scenario, in which I had all bases covered, into a nightmare. Cleary Dr. Martin allows this type of conduct and is ultimately to blame for the climate of hostility we walked into and experienced. I promise you that there are better options out there.
I was worried when my 7 year old sons doctor told me that he had a hernia. Normally, when one of my kids have surgery, I take this straight to Asheville. My son's doctor recommended Dr. Martin and I decided to check him out. My son really liked him and felt very comfortable with him. At my son's pre-op appt., Dr. Martin explained what was wrong, the risks involved and how he could fix it. On the day of his surgery, Dr. Martin explained everything he was going to do, and how long it should take. Everything went a lot better than I had expected and I will absolutely recommend him to anyone! My son has his post-op scheduled and he looks forward to seeing Dr. Martin again. Not only did he do a great job with the surgery, but his manner was great. The place where he had to cut my son looks like a scratch instead of a cut....Believe me, my husband will definately return to Dr. Martin if the need ever arises again. Donna K. Burchfield
