The company owns and operates an irradiation facility located in Mulberry, Fla., that uses gamma radiation produced by Cobalt 60 to treat or process various food and non-food items for insect disinfestations, shelf-life extension and reduction of microorganisms. The benefits of irradiation by FTSI are established as agents in the prevention food-borne illness. Food irradiation is supported by the United States Department of Agriculture , the World Health Organization, the United States Public Health Service, the American Medical Association, the Institute of Food Technologists and reputable scientific and medical organizations throughout the U.S. In addition, more than forty countries have approved the irradiation of food products.
