  Early intervention may be necessary in children aged 7-10 in order to prevent serious problems during tooth and jaw development. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends that a child’s first visit to orthodontist should be at age 7 to ensure proper development. Interceptive care may help avoid the need for extractions, jaw surgery and has also been shown to be effective in childhood sleep apnea. Some common treatment options include palate expanders, space maintainers, or braces on a few teeth.

  Brush your removable appliance every day as a part of your regular brushing and flossing schedule. Because food particles and plaque can accumulate on your appliance just as they do on your teeth, soak the appliance daily. Dissolve a Polident, Efferdent or other denture-cleaning tablet in a glass of tap water at room temperature and soak your appliance once every day. Your appliance will taste better, and you will prevent plaque and bacterial accumulation.

  Dr. Lau was involved with a student exchange trip with dental students at Peking University School of Stomatology in Beijing, China. During her orthodontic residency, she treated many patients with craniofacial anomalies, which inspired her to complete her research on early prediction of the need for orthognathic surgery in patients with cleft lip and palate.
