What problems can Algae cause? The first noticeable problem is that no one seems to want to go swimming. The second problem is that it requires work and effort and money to rid the water completely of algae. It is therefore best to call and have a train technician look at your pool. What types of Algae are there? There are over 21,000 known varieties of algae! In the pool business we avoid all of the complication by referring to algae by the color they exhibit.10; Green Algae: An extremely common variety, green algae will usually appear after a hazy condition in the water from a lack of proper filtration and/or sanitation. Yellow Algae: A wall clinging variety, also called mustard algae, is usually found on the shady side of the pool. It is sheet forming, and can be difficult to eradicate completely. Call and have BJ Pool Service take a look. Black Algae: Perhaps the most aggravating strain of algae, it can be extremely difficult to eradicate completely. This is not entirely accurate, but the difficulty in removing it fully is due to the strong roots and protective layers over top of the black algae plant. Black algae will appear as dark black or blue/green spots, usually the size of a pencil eraser tip. Their roots extend into the plaster or tile grout, and unless the roots are destroyed completely. Pink Algae: Not really an algae at all, but a form of bacteria. Appears as spots or streaks in corners and crevices. It is slow to spread and rare that it will bloom over an entire pool. Can I open a chlorine cartridge to refill it? No! This is never as good idea. The cartridges you refer to are designed to be used as they come and when modified will use more chlorine and may severely damage your underground plumbing lines. How do know if I have a leak in my swimming pool? If the water loss is more than evaporation and splash out would allow for, than you may have a leak and further diagnosis is required. Why won’t the pressure on my filter drop? This is usually the result of a clogged filter. If after a backwashing the pressure is still high the filter must be dismantled and cleaned. It is also possible that there is a clog elsewhere in the system downstream Does swimming cause asthma? There is no convincing evidence that swimming in chlorinated pools causes asthma in otherwise healthy people. In fact, physicians often prescribe swimming for their asthmatic patients. They say the benefits of swimming as a healthy form of exercise offsets any potential respiratory risk. What causes “chlorine” odor, red eyes and itchy skin? These unpleasant conditions indicate that the pool water has not been properly treated. A common cause is high levels of chloramines, formed when chlorine combines with body oils, perspiration, urine and other contaminants brought into pools by swimmers. Good pool management, including proper ventilation of indoor pools, can significantly reduce chloramine levels in water and air. Skin irritation can be caused by germs in the pool or the PH balance being off. Call your pool service provider.
