General Info

In 1938, Robert Reid opened a custom furniture workshop and founded Reid Reproductions in Mobile, Alabama. He was soon joined by his brother Julian, and the brothers specialized in all types of handmade furniture. Over several decades, Robert and Julian realized that their customers were more interested in fine, craftsman beds than any other type of furniture. The brothers focused on making antique reproduction four poster beds, and mastered a careful technique to produce each individual handmade piece with accurate quality. With the new focus came a new name in 1960. As "Reid Classics", Robert, Julian and family created a catalog and started a mail order business, establishing an international reputation for quality craftsmanship. In 1987, Julian suffered a stroke that limited his ability to continue wood working, but the craft continued to thrive under Robert's leadership for many years. In 2001, after a full day of woodworking, Robert Reid passed away. His son and experienced assistant, Hamp Reid, carried on the tradition of bed making for another decade. In 2011, Hamp passed the torch to his son Andrew, to continue the Reid Classics legacy. An apprentice under his grandfather and father, Andrew owns and operates Reid Classics in Dothan, Alabama. While times have changed since the workshop first opened it's doors, the quality and craftsmanship of the Reid tradition has been carefully passed down through generations, still offering a selection of beautiful, handmade beds. Andrew's training, woodworking experience, and understanding of the Reid Classics legacy combine to share a family's love of woodworking with this generation - and many more.
