- Urinary IncontinenceThe loss of bladder control is a common and often embarrassing problem. The severity ranges from occasionally leaking urine when you cough or sneeze to having an urge to urinate that is so sudden you don’t make it to the bathroom in time. There are several reasons that urinary incontinence occurs from pregnancy, child birth, weak bladder muscles and overactive bladder muscles.

- EndometriosisThe lining of the uterus is called the endometrium. Sometimes, tissue like that which normally lines the inside of the uterus grows in other parts of the body, like the ovaries, bowel or bladder. The problem is, this special tissue, which is designed to grow and thicken each cycle to prepare the body for pregnancy, also grows and thickens and even bleeds like the uterine wall (even when it’s not in the uterus!), during the period. For women with endometriosis, this can cause pelvic pain, pain during sex, even pain during bowel movements or urination. If you have any of these symptoms, please make an appointment so we can talk about it. While endometriosis is a long-term condition, please know that you have treatment options that can lessen the severity of your symptoms and help you cope.

- Cervical CancerIt is widely accepted that women should have an annual exam. But when should they begin? The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that women establish care around 13-15 years of age. This does not typically include a pelvic exam but rather focuses on patient education. ACOG recommends annual pelvic exam for all women 21 and older. A lot of women believe the only reason they get a pelvic exam is to obtain their pap smear. Remember, pap smears are a screening test for cervical cancer. Newest recommendations from ACOG suggest spacing out pap smears depending on age and history. Your annual exam screens for more than just cervical cancer so it is still recommended that you see your OBGYN on an annual basis. ACOG recommends an annual exam promoting prevention practices, recognizing risk factors for disease, and identifying medical problems. Please contact us to schedule your annual exam.

- UltrasoundMost pregnant women have between 10-15 prenatal visits. Typically you will visit the doctor every four weeks during the first trimester. Your initial prenatal visit will be the longest appointment. The first visit will include family history information, labs, and an ultrasound. We will also go over what to expect for those that are experiencing motherhood for the first time. We encourage you to write down any questions that you may have about your pregnancy and prenatal care.
- Mammography
- Minimally Invasive SurgeryWe offer a wide range of minimal invasive procedures as well, so before undergoing major surgery, consider these high-tech solutions that offer less pain quicker recovery and faster results.
- Robotic SurgeryThe advantages of robotic surgery are quite remarkable. By using several small incisions—“about the size of your pinky†, states Dr. Teigen—OBGYN West doctors are able to carefully guide surgical instruments and a magnifying camera into their patient without making the traditional, and large, 3-4 inch incision. Because of the magnification, explains Dr. Wes Grootwassink, “I can literally sew using suture I can’t see with my naked eye†and “do more delicate work than I could do with my hands†unassisted.
- HysterectomyMenopause is a natural part of aging. Every woman will go through menopause. The average age is 51.5, but you can easily start symptoms ten years on either side of that number. The years around this point are called perimenopause, or “around menopause”. Changes begin when the ovaries start making less estrogen. This is generally a gradual change over several years, but if you have your ovaries surgically removed, this may trigger severe symptoms. That’s why many women who have their ovaries removed choose to take hormones. However, for women who have a hysterectomy but keep their ovaries, their period end but they do not immediately experience menopause. They go through menopause at the normal age. Changing periods is just one of the symptoms of menopause. If you’re experiencing one or more of the symptoms listed here, please make an appointment and we’ll talk about what we can do to help make your symptoms more bearable.
