The Minnesota Twins, a Major League Baseball team, are one of five teams in the Central Division of the American League. The Twins came into being with the 1961 move of the Washington Senators franchise. Then owner Calvin Griffith seized the opportunity to move the financially failing Senators to Minnesota. The team was renamed the Twins after the Minneapolis-St. Paul area, the Twin Cities. The team reached the playoffs three times during the franchise s first 10 years. The Twins won their first American League pennant in 1965 and won consecutive division titles in 1969-70 and 2002-04. Griffith sold his interest in the club in 1984 to local banker Carl Pohlad. In 1987, the Twins won their first World Championship and won a second title in 1991. Memorable Twins players include Harmon Killebrew, Rod Carew, Tony Oliva and Kirby Puckett. The Twins play at the Hubert Humphrey Metrodome.
