- Kitchen RemodelingIf you're starting a kitchen renovation, now is a great time to create exactly what you want. When it comes to layout, always optimize your space; focus on functionality and how your design can cater to the needs of you and your family. For tight spaces, a galley layout is a great kitchen remodeling option. Since horizontal space is limited, think vertical; stack counters and shelves high up on the walls, and try to find innovative storage containers and double-duty pieces. For larger layouts, try an L-shaped or U-shaped design with a big center island or peninsula. These shapes provide plenty of cabinet and countertop space, and you can add a bar-height counter to the island for an instant eat-in space. Reviewing kitchen pictures and photos are a great way to to get a feel for different kitchen layouts and help you decide what you want.

- FlooringHaving a special place for you and the whole crew to read, hang out or watch a movie is usually what sparks a basement remodel to begin with! Built-in shelving for movies and books, a space for your family, cozy lighting, flooring and furniture make for the perfect home gathering area.
- Door Installation/ReplacementBefore you buy a new furniture set, be sure to consider the bedroom size. Even though you might need three dressers and two nightstands in your bedroom, you might not have the space for them. Measure the furniture and visualize or tape out where it will go so you can judge what will actually fit. Be sure to leave plenty of walking space, and double check that drawers and cabinets have enough room to open properly. When picking a spot for your bed, consider all the windows and doors. Placing a bed underneath a window or close to the door can be a bad idea, especially for light sleepers, as even the smallest crack of light can cause sleep disturbance.

- Skylight Repair/ReplacementImportantly, during the design phase, Gil suggested that we consider the potential resale value in the overall design, such that the building could be re-purposed when we eventually sell. Instead of a nondescript rectangular building, Gil suggested a hybrid post and beam interior with a 14-20 foot high ceiling, abundant windows (some even custom-designed for the building’s shape) and skylights with retractable shades to bring in natural light. We provided running water, a full bath, a wet bar, electricity, and all electrical and electronic connections such that building has internet and fiber optic connections for audio and video. Importantly, the resulting building easily could be re-purposed in the future as an in-law apartment, work-out facility, art studio, garage for collectible cars, or even (incredibly), a pool and pool house.

- Room AdditionsWe are constantly making additions, or upgrades, to our lives. Some as simple as a new, easy dinner recipe, to a new living room couch, or maybe even a new home addition, adding functionality and efficiency to your life.
- New Construction
- SunroomsGil was just completing an addition to a duplex in our neighborhood. He invited us to look at the project. We liked the craftsmanship and how the design took advantage of available space. Gil’s concept for our project focused on opening up the space -- combining the small kitchen, dining room, and sunroom into a single space, adding a wrap-around deck that would become an outdoor room connecting to the new kitchen and dining space, and bringing in as much natural light as possible.
- LandscapingGil made it a priority to complete the project as quickly as possible. Our property was upgraded with new infrastructure including gas, water, and electric. The kitchen and upstairs bath were completely renovated and a second bath added in the basement. New exterior windows replaced the 50’s style storm windows, original plumbing was re-routed, the basement and first level interior walls were completely rebuilt and fully insulated, the front entrance brick stairs were rebuilt, and there was landscaping. We received great value for the price -- it is a new house.

- Retaining WallsEssentially it is a gully, the base of which is 33 feet below the grade of our basement. The back yard already had a long retaining wall already in place, and the irregular shape of our property presented additional problems because of Fairfax County’s required set-backs from our property line. It also is heavily wooded. The challenges of the location were so daunting that a few subcontractors and suppliers declined to even work on the project.
- Window Installation/ReplacementBASEMENT (1,259 sq. ft.): 1 bedroom with egress windows and full closet, 1 bedroom/media room with egress windows and wet bar/kitchenette option, large open recreation room with egress windows and door to backyard, full bathroom with large shower, utility room with optional doggy wash station. All rooms except bathroom have natural light.
- Residential Roof RepairThe house has doors at opposite ends of the four sides to utilize natural breezes to cool the house during the mild months. A metal roof on the wrap around porch keeps hot summer sun from beating down on the comfortable rocking chairs. The field stone porch floor helps keep the space under the porch roof cool. The exterior is made to withstand the elements for years to come with field stone porch floor, Hardie-plank, stone veneer accents, Azek trim and metal roofing on the lower pitched porch roof.

- InsulationWe liked his work so much we hired him back to renovate our upstairs, which involved totally redoing the bathroom and adding more storage and insulation in the two bedrooms. His crew is always courteous and knowledgable and he responds immediately to even small concerns. They were sensitive to the fact that we were living in our home during the remodel. We highly recommend Bremen Builders for your home renovation.”
