- Pediatric CareLohit Sodagum is from Budd Lake, New Jersey. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor of Arts in Public Health. At KDDS, he hopes to become more comfortable with patient interaction and is excited to work with the other gap students and providers. Lohit hopes to pursue an MD/MPHto learn more about health disparities affecting underserved populations. He is not certain about what he will specialize in but is interested in pediatrics and oncology. In his free time, Lohit likes to play basketball, follow sports and learn guitar.
- Primary CareOur dermatologists work closely with primary care physicians, other specialists, and subspecialized dermatologists to ensure teamwork and continuity of care. Each of our clinicians is an expert in diagnosis as well as medical and surgical treatment of all diseases of the skin, hair, and nails. We often perform diagnostic testing in the office at the same visit. When necessary, we can conveniently arrange for prompt surgical treatment, including Mohs micrographic surgery. We can also provide extensive patch testing in our Contact Dermatitis Clinic.
- Family PracticeShannon Appelquist is from Warwick, New York. She is a recent graduate of Cornell University, where she majored in Nutritional Sciences and Biology in Society. While at Cornell, she was the director of a large student-run philanthropy, the co-founder of a medical humanities magazine, and worked to administer Covid-19 tests to Cornell students and faculty. Through the Kuchnir Dermatology Gap Year Program, Shannon hopes to gain experience in developing effective relationships with patients and medical professionals and to learn about how nutrition plays a role in dermatological conditions. After the gap year program, she hopes to pursue her medical degree with an interest in the specialties of dermatology, surgery, and family medicine. She intends to emphasize the importance of preventative care in health through both her personal practice as well as involvement with the public health sector. In her free time, Shannon enjoys painting, running, and backpacking.
- Emergency CareScott is originally from Northbrook, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago. In 2016, he graduated from the University of Rochester with a degree in Cell and Developmental Biology and a minor in Theater. While attending the University of Rochester, Scott was involved in a cappella, student government, gave tours for prospective students, and created a new organization fostering new musical theater opportunities on campus. In addition, Scott gained research experience in cancer, neuroscience, and sleep and circadian biology and volunteered at Rochester General Hospital in the Emergency Department. While at KDDS, Scott has had the opportunity to work with Dr. Thanh-nga Tran, Dr. Peter Schalock, and Dr. Louis Kuchnir. He hopes to pursue a pediatric speciality and plans on incorporating the experience he has gained from this year to better his commitment to future patients and medicine.
- Infectious DiseasesManas Deolankar is originally from Morganville, New Jersey. He attended Tufts University where he majored in Biology. Manas joined KDDS in order to better understand the responsibility of managing a person's healthand hopes to practice connecting with patients to become a supportive figure in the delivery of their healthcare. In the future, Manas sees himself as a clinician potentially in the field of infectious diseases, but continues to keep an open mind about his prospective specialty.​Outside of work, Manas enjoys playing both the guitar and bass guitar.
- OphthalmologySuneet Waghmarae is originally from East Amherst, New York. He attended the University of Rochester where he majored in Biology and Economics. He decided to spend a gap year at KDDS because the program offers the best opportunity to develop close relationships with physicians, and find a mentor in the medical field. Suneet hopes to immerse himself in the clinical environment at KDDS to develop clinical skills that will help him be an efficient and effective doctor. In the future, Suneet is specifically interested in Dermatology, Oncology, and Ophthalmology but is excited to gain exposure to other specialities in the years to come. Outside of work, he enjoys working out, listening to music and exploring Boston.
- GynecologyChandler McMillan is originally from a small beach town on Long Island, New York. She attended Duke Universityand graduated with a bachelor's degree in sociology with a minor in chemistry. At KDDS, she is excited to engage with a diverse set of patients and gain exposure to both the general and surgical sides of dermatology. She is also excited to better understand what goes into navigating medicine successfully within a private practice setting. Chandler hopes to explore obstetrics and gynecology or neonatology in her future medical endeavors, but is open to exploring any and all fields! In her spare time, she enjoys baking, binge-watching shows on Netflix, and going to the beach!
- ObstetricsErin Gerardo is from Aliso Viejo, California. She attended Yale University where she majored in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology and was a pole vaulter and captain of the varsity track and field team. She also was involved in sexual misconduct prevention and reproductive health research while in school. At KDDS Erin is excited to gain mentorship and build relationships with talented and bright physicians who have a desire to teach and work with students. She also loves being able to work directly with patients day to day in such a hands-on manner. Erin is interested in potentially pursuing a career in obstetrics and gynecology or orthopedics. During her free time she likes running, listening to music or podcasts, and drinking good coffee.
- Internal MedicineAli Nasser is from Dearborn, Michigan. He is a recent graduate from Harvard University where he majored in Neurobiology with a minor in Global Health and Health Policy. At KDDS, he is looking forward to working with various medical professionals and gaining a new perspective on the everyday work of a physician. He is also very excited to be a part of a community of like-minded peers, pursuing their passion for medicine together. After the program, Ali will attend medical school and is interested in a few different paths including internal medicine, emergency medicine, surgery.However, Ali would ultimately like to take his skills and knowledge and apply them to projects that improve healthcare around the globe. During his free time, he loves to read, go biking, hiking, and play basketball.
- NeurologyKailey was originally from the Seattle area before attending Princeton to study Molecular Biology. She joined KDDS to gain greater clinical experience before heading off to medical school. Kailey is interested in neurology and surgery but is open to a wide variety of different specialties. She enjoys hiking and cooking in her spare time.
- PsychiatryAllison is from Cumberland, Rhode Island but went to college at the University of Michigan with a major in neuroscience. She hopes to learn more about caring for the patient beyond just their disease from Dr. White and how to become an effective patient advocate. In the future, Allison is interested in pursuing the fields of neurology, psychiatry, or geriatrics. In her free time, she likes to go for runs, read, or hang out with friends.
- EndocrinologyNick Toomey is originally from San Mateo, California. He attended The University of Chicago where he majored in Biological Sciences with a specialization in Endocrinology. On top of academics, he also played four years of baseball for his University.Nick joined KDDS to gain clinical experience while receiving valuable insight into the daily lives of physicians. For the future, he is mostly keeping an open mind about medical specialties, but is especially interested in surgery. In his free timeNick likes to ride his bike, snow ski, hike, and read.
- RadiologyBrian Zhang is originally from Mahwah, New Jersey. He graduated from Case Western Reserve University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology and minors in Chemistry & Psychology. There, he also conducted research on dermal fibrosis which sparked his interest in dermatology. At KDDS, he hopes to gain experience with other aspects of dermatology like patch testing for allergic contact dermatitis while working with Dr. Peter Schalock. Additionally, he is excited to learn the essentials of providing high-quality patient care and spend time getting to know the other gap year students. Brian plans to attend medical school after his completion of this program. Although undecided on any particular specialty, he is currently interested in dermatology, cardiology, and interventional radiology. In his free time, Brian enjoys exercising, trying out new recipes, spending time with friends, and watching Jeopardy!

- OrthopedicsCamden Bohn was born and raised in Granger, Indiana. He spent the last four years attending Harvard University where he majored in Biomedical Engineering. He aspires to gain a more comprehensive understandingof the medical field during his time at KDDS. As of now, he has gained some skills through shadowing and clinical research but he is excited to become fully immersed in a medical practice and gain a better understanding of the everyday life of a physician. Camden is leaning towards orthopedics due to his athletic background, but is open to change as he continues to learn more about different medical fields. In his free time, he enjoysexercise, sports, food, and spending quality time with friends.
- Orthopedic SurgerySarah Yapo is from Rockford, Illinois but spent her childhood in Malaysia. Sarah attended Washington University in St. Louis, graduating with a Bachelor's of Arts in Biochemistry and a minor in Psychological and Brain Sciences. At KDDS, she is eager to gain experience developing positive doctor-patient relationships and insight into the administrative duties of the clinic. She is also excited for the mentorship and collaboration with the physicians and her peers! Sarah is open to exploring different specialties, but she is currently interested in orthopedic surgery. In her free time, she enjoys painting, reading, exploring new places, and being active!
- NeurosurgeryChiemela Izima is from Los Angeles, California. He attended Washington University in St.Louis where he majored in Chemistry with a Concentration in Biochemistry and minored in Ancient Studies. Here, he enjoyed teaching and researching in the Chemistry department while serving as a sprints team captain(2020-2021) on the varsity track and field team. At KDDS, Chiemela is excited to learn about the art of medicine through brilliant physicians and mid-level providers while developing meaningful relationships with Doctor assistants and staff. Chiemela thoroughly enjoys listening to the unique stories of patients while supporting their journey to better health. In the future, Chiemela aims to pursue a career in academic surgery, potentially in neurosurgery, orthopedics, or thoracic surgery. During his free time, he enjoys exploring the local food scene with friends, community rowing, and watching thrillers on Netflix.
- OtolaryngologyJoshua Kotlyar is originally from Oceanside, New York. He graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemistry and Chemical Biology. At KDDS, Josh hopes to learn more about the intricacies of medicine in a practice setting while working with experts in the field of dermatology. He is also excited to gain more experience interacting with patients. In terms of medical specialty, Josh is currently interested in dermatology, otolaryngology,and oncology, but is keeping an open mind and is excited to explore many other specialties in medical school. He is also interested in working with underserved populations abroad, particularly in Latin America. In his free time, he enjoys traveling, skiing, and trying new foods.
- Mohs SurgeryMohs surgery is a special type of skin cancer surgery, named after its inventor, Dr. Frederic Mohs. Mohs surgery involves the surgical removal of skin cancer with a special technique where all of the skin margins are evaluated with a microscope. It is a highly specialized procedure for the total removal of skin cancers. Dr. Carl Schanbacher is our Mohs Surgeon.
- Reconstructive SurgeryMaddie Bald is from Birmingham, Alabama, and was a Presidential Scholar at Boston College where she majored in Biology and was involved in the Campus Activities Board. At Kuchnir Dermatology she hopes to learn more about reconstructive surgery, patient-centered care, pathology, and dermatologic oncology from her mentor Mohs surgeon Carl Schanbacher, M.D.. She hopes to one day serve as a physician in the Southeast. In her free time, she enjoys exploring and fishing in the outdoors, watching college football (War Eagle), visiting fun places and restaurants in the Northeast, and jamming out to Taylor Swift.
- BotoxBotox® and Dysport® are injectables used to correct crows feet, dimpled chins, neck bands, lip lines, and forehead lines. They are neuromoldulators that prevent the nerves from stimulating and contracting muscles that cause expression lines. Relaxing these muscles softens the wrinkles on the overlying skin. Improvement can be seen within a few days and typically lasts from 3 to 6 months.
- Plastic SurgeryMitch Hanson is originally from Bogart, Georgia. He attended college at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta where he studied Neuroscience with a focus on Health and Medical Sciences. With prior experience in early STEM education and collegiate level teaching, he is enthusiastic not only to understand the etiology of skin conditions and mechanisms of treatments but also the methodology to teaching this information to patients and new healthcare professionals. He hopes to challenge himself this year at KDDS to undertake more leadership in a clinical environment and hands-on training that will ultimately provide him with a more robust understanding of our healthcare system. Additionally, he is enthusiastic to promote a positive team-building environment among providers and students through social event planning like apple picking and hiking. Mitch hopes to attend medical school to further his desire in progressing clinical education opportunities and holistic care with techniques acquired through his personal trainer certification. Additionally, he is currently interested in reconstructive plastic surgery acquired while attending this program. Mitch enjoys spending his free time outdoors, traveling, reading, and bonding with other students.
- Scar RevisionUnfortunately, all surgeries result in scars. When we remove your skin cancer, the procedure will result in a scar. Dr. Schanbacher has great expertise in reconstructing skin cancer wounds in all locations as a result of his specialized training in Mohs surgery. In some cases, a minor scar revision may be necessary in the future to achieve the best cosmetic outcome. We refer few cases out for reconstruction. We do work with colleagues in plastic, head and neck, and oculoplastic surgery, and we are happy to refer you to them for reconstruction after Mohs surgery if you desire.

- Skin CancerAfter taking a brief history, we will perform a limited skin exam, and mark the site of your skin cancer with you. We will then inject a local anesthetic to numb the skin and prevent discomfort for you. Our surgeon will then remove the affected area with a thin layer of tissue. We will stop the bleeding and place a large bandage over the area.
- DermatologyDr. Lisa Shen joined Kuchnir Dermatology in 2019 while continuing her academic career at the Boston University School of Medicine. Dr. Shen completed a dermatology residency and pediatric fellowship at Northwestern University. She received her medical degree from the University of Wisconsin. She is board-certified in both dermatology and pediatric dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology.

- EczemaKuchnir Dermatology offers treatment of skin, nail, and hair disorders for children of all ages. This includes the treatment of more common conditions such as atopic eczema, acne, moles, and warts, as well as less common conditions, including inherited disorders, hair loss, hemangiomas, and other birthmarks.
- LesionsThe VBeam pulse dye laser is used to treat a variety of vascular or red lesions, such as cherry angiomas, ​telangiectasia, and scars. It is a safe and effective treatment option that uses an intense, but gentle burst of light into a selected area. Number of treatments can vary due to size and condition and may range from 1 to 5 treatments total.
- Skin CareGordon is originally from Champaign, Illinois. He graduated from Washington University in St. Louis with a B.A. in Biochemistry and is a second year medical student at Southern Illinois University School of Medicine. Outside of school he enjoys running, watching movies, and playing chess. For his gap year before medical school, Gordon worked as a clinical assistant with Dr. Weinfeld and Dr. Goodkin at Dermatology and Skin Care Associates (DSCA).
- PsoriasisIt is important that you not be taking any cortisone derivative (Prednisone, Cyclosporine, Mycophenolate, Azathioprine) by mouth for 7 days prior to your visit with us. You should not have received a cortisone injection within 1 month prior to your visit. Medicines for psoriasis such as Humira or Enbrel are OK to continue.
- Sports MedicineNick Taylor is from Burlington, Connecticut. He graduated from Wesleyan University where he majored in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry with minors in Chemistry and Biophysics. At KDDS, Nick is excited to develop his communication skills with both patients and physicians while learning how to facilitate positive patient experiences in a clinical setting. He is also eager to assist in patient care through both managerial duties and medical procedures. After attending medical school, Nick plans on pursuing a career in either orthopaedic trauma surgery or surgical sports medicine. In his free time, Nick likes to go fishing with his dad and younger brother, read books at a local café, or pump some iron in the gym.

- AllergiesBen Evans is from Miami, Florida. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University with a Bachelor's in Chemistry where he also conducted research on skin regeneration. At KDDS, he hopes to further his understanding of dermatology by experiencing different aspects of dermatology such as allergy testing. He also hopes to be able to develop meaningful relationships with the staff at the clinic as well as the patients. Ben hopes to obtain his MD and study dermatology, as he has been interested ever since high school after having to worry about skin cancer in the blazing Florida sun. In his free time, Ben enjoys photography, playing video games,doing crosswords, and taking long walks on the beach.
