After completing his training in Radiation Oncology at Yale in 1992, Dr. Samuels spent 8 years on the faculty at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, culminating in a position as Clinical Director of Radiation Oncology at University Hospitals of Cleveland and Director of Head/Neck Radiation Oncology at that institution. He left Cleveland to join the staff at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami from 2000-2010, with a continued focus on head/neck cancer and also on lung cancer. During this time, he was active at the national committee level with the Cancer and Leukemia Group B and the American College of Radiology, culminating in his election to Fellowship in the American College of Radiology. Dr. Samuels joined the faculty at the University of Miami in 2010 as Director of Head/Neck Radiation Oncology and Co-Leader of the Head/Neck Cancer Site Disease Group.Dr. Samuels' current research interests include the application of DNA protein kinase inhibitors in the treatment of head/neck and lung cancers and he serves as Co-Principal Investigator on a developing National Cancer Institute Trial in this area and well as Coordinating Investigator on an international trial using this drug with radiation therapy. In addition, he directs a combined laboratory/clinical team focusing on novel aspects of the pathogenesis of HPV-associated oropharynx cancers including creation of a large saliva/blood/tissue sample library and active laboratory investigation using these samples.
