Harry W. Flynn, Jr., M.D., has a long and distinguished career in academic medicine through a combination of teaching, research, and patient care. A specialist in the medical and surgical treatment of diseases of the retina and vitreous, he has been involved in the training of more than 600 residents, fellows, and visiting physicians over the past 40 years. He has been an instructor at the American Academy of Ophthalmology annual meeting, at the Association for Research in Vision in Ophthalmology, and at numerous national and international conferences. In the area of research, Flynn has conducted numerous clinical trials including the Early Treatment of Diabetic Retinopathy Study, the Branch and Central Retinal Vein Occlusion Studies, and the Silicone Oil Study. He has published more than 547 articles in peer-reviewed journals and edited seven books including two that came out in 2018: Endophthalmitis in Clinical Practice, and Vitreoretinal Disease: Diagnosis, Management, and Clinical Pearls. Flynn has served as president of the Vitreous Society, The Miami Ophthalmological Society, and the Retina Society. He has received numerous honors including the AAO Life Achievement Honor, the Florida Society of Ophthalmology Service to Medicine Award, The Club Jules Gonin Hermann Wacker Award, the Honorary Alumnus Award from the University of Virginia School of Medicine, and the Secretariat Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Flynn was named to The Ophthalmologist Power List 2018.
