Chicory-coffee is most associated with the city of new orleans than any other u.s. City. New orleans was one of the major consumers of coffee prior to the civil war. In 1840, the union army blockaded new orleans harbor cutting off the supply of coffee and forcing those in the city to look for alternatives. Taking a cue from their french roots, the people of new orleans took to using chicory as both an additive and a substitute for coffee. Today, chicory remains a popular additive in the coffee houses that populate the french quarter in new orleans and remains as one of the nostalgic flavors to anyone who has had to opportunity to visit this grand city. - Colombia - Popayán Tierradentro12 Oz. Bag: $14.95Tasting notes: bing cherry, milk chocolate, orange juice, anjou pear; this lot of colombian coffee comes from the asociacion de cabildos juan tama, an indigenous group of coffee producers located in the tierradentro reserve in the popayán department of cauca. Tierradentro is a national archeological park and unesco- recognized world heritage site known for its pre-columbian hypogea (catacombs). This area is also home to eight indigenous cabildos (tribes), many of which have been producing coffee for generations. The coffee growing area covers 2,000 hectares, impact- ing about 25,000 people dependent on growing coffee for a living. The area is densely forested with plantains, avocados, mangos, and guavas interspersed between the caturra and typica coffee plants.
- Brazil - Iapar-5912 Oz. Bag: $16.95Tasting notes: molasses, grenadine, fudge, cantaloupe, walnuts; this special reserve offering of iapar-59 comes from our partners at camocim. Earlier, we tasted several coffees from this farm (we even worked with them to create our own lot- pedra azul), and we had farm owner henrique sloper separate out this lot of iapar-59. This unique offering has a smooth body, elegant acidity, and a wonderful, deep sweetness with notes of molasses, fudge, walnuts, cantaloupe, and grenadine.
- Mexico - Finca El Vergel12 Oz. Bag: $12.955 Lb. Can: $65.50Tasting notes: clementine citrus, granny smith apple, brown sugar; finca el vergel (the orchard farm) lies in the municipality of pluma hidalgo in the state of oaxaca, mexico. Situated between the coast and the mountains, this farm is surrounded by indigenous pine and oak trees and is home to a wide variety of wildlife and birds. Finca el vergel is 176 hectares, 15 of which compose a reserve for local red cedar trees, 71 serve as an ecological reserve, while the remaining 90 are set aside for growing coffee. The coastal breeze and number of naturally running springs in the area contribute to the quality of the coffee. The focus on planting typica and creole (a mutation of the typica variety) cultivars, known for their clarity and sweetness, also adds to finca el vergel's quality in the cup.
- Peru - Cecovasa (Kukipata Paititi)12 Oz. Bag: $13.951 Lb. Can: $15.50Tasting notes: almond extract, tamarind, orange blossoms, brown sugar, chocolate, tart cherries; this lot of coffee comes from smallholder producers in san pedro de putina punco, on the eastern slopes of the andes mountains in southern peru. These producers belong to cooperatives that are part of the central agricultural cooperative of the valleys of sandia (cecovasa). Cecovasa was formed in 1970 by five co-ops that wanted to directly export their coffee, obtain higher prices, and utilize cost sharing.

Bag: $65.50Tasting notes: ripe bing cherry, peanut butter, milk chocolate; the fazenda nossa senhora de fatima was named after the virgin fatima and also a religious city in portugal where the family traces its roots. Ricardo aguiar resende and his wife, gisele, direct the production, commercialization, and social projects at their family-owned and -operated farm in the cerrado region in the minas gerais state of brazil. Ricardo is a third-generation coffee farmer. With 230 hectares under coffee production, the farm produces 100%-certified organic coffee and is a leader in socially and environmentally sustainable practices.
- Ethiopia - Inara Union (Debelo Fair-Trade Co-Op)12 Oz. Bag: $14.955 Lb. Bag: $77.00Tasting notes: lemonade, bergamot, jasmine, cantaloupe, peach, milk chocolate; the debelo fair-trade cooperative is one of many small cooperatives within the limu inara farmers multi- purpose union. The debelo cooperative was originally founded in 1976, but fell apart shortly after the abolish- ment of the derg regime in the late 1980's. Reformed in 2004, the debelo cooperative began participating in a sustainable project with technoserve based on transparency and increased quality production in 2010. With the aid of technoserve the cooperative and its farmers have gotten support setting up washing stations and new coop- erative structures. This has been beneficial both in terms of the quality of the coffee and the increase in productionwhich has seen a significant increase of income for the members of the cooperative.
