PMSLIC was formed by the Pennsylvania Medical Society in 1978. Commercial insurers were pulling out of the market and the society wanted to establish a company that would be a stable source of professional liability insurance for the medical profession on a long-term basis. PMSLIC is one of the largest writers of professional liability insurance for individual physicians in Pennsylvania. It is wholly owned by NORCAL Mutual Insurance Company of San Francisco. NORCAL is a physician-owned and physician-operated company that was formed to respond to the needs of California physicians and, along with PMSLIC, is dedicated to providing quality and service to insureds and advocacy for the medical community. Located in Harrisburg, Pa., PMSLIC employs nearly 100 people.
