- In 1928, Herbert Hoover was elected President, Penicillin was discovered, and Mickey Mouse appeared in his first cartoon. On Friday and Saturday nights farmers from all across Ingham County rode into town to eat, drink and stop at Kean's Five & Dime - the newly opened dry goods emporium in downtown Mason.
- Welcome to Kean's, Mason's oldest continuously operating business.Kean's was founded in 1928 by Gus and Fern Kean. Their original store, complete with tin ceilings and wooden floors consisted of 20 feet of Jefferson Street frontage and offered township and county residents dry goods, notions, and penny candy, along with first-name greetings and friendly smiles.
- As their popularity (and their family) grew, Gus began purchasing adjacent buildings as they became available.Today Kean's occupies 120 feet of Jefferson Street frontage and more than 17,000 square feet of retail space that includes an endless selection of gifts and collectibles, an extensive craft and notion department, plus fabrics, toys, confections, and a full line of Hallmark cards, gift items and stationary products. The tin ceilings are still there. So is the warm, personalized service. Kean's is still family owned and family operated.
- The staff is well-versed in every product and every line of Kean's merchandise. They don't just sell the products, they know the products. They'll help you find what you're looking for and help you make your selection. They'll keep an eye out for what you like, so that on your next visit you're guaranteed shopping success. Kean's also offers classes to help customers improve their sewing and crafting skills.
- In 1995, they added a restaurant. At the award winning Baja Grille, visitors can enjoy a hearty breakfast, a variety of lunch specials, or a complete dinner in a casual and festive setting.
- The store is currently owned and operated by Teresa and Steve Wren.
