Outstanding improvements have been made! In the early 1990's the WWW got some bad press such as high chlorine content in the finished water, claims of dirty water, one issue with improper use of equipment and staff, etc. But once the current water superintendent Jim Hooper came on board, having been promoted from within the department, and with the outstanding chairman of the water commission Mike Callahan having oversight, things took a dramatic change. Jim and the excellent staff pioneered a program of pre-filtration chlorination which gave longer contact time and drastically reduced the residual chlorine content of the finished water. They have agressively undertaken the replacement of water mains dating to the 1800's, removed almost all the lead services, built sediment removal ponds to entirely clean up the fresh water effluent going back into the Natchaug River, conducted the largest watershed water quality study of any CT. water works, won a CT. taste contest, reduced energy
