Serving in the United States Army Reserve, part of the U.S. Army, is similar to a part-time job. It enables soldiers to keep their civilian careers while they continue to train near home and serve their country. Soldiers in the Army Reserve typically spend one weekend a month in training, and attend a two-week field training exercise once a year. Service options for the Army Reserve range from three to six years, depending on the individual s Army job and where their Army Reserve Center is located. When active duty soldiers deploy overseas, Army Reserve soldiers often fill their positions at home, serving as drill sergeants, instructors and security personnel. In the event of national disasters such as hurricanes or flooding, Army Reserve soldiers are on the scene to support humanitarian and relief operations.
