Over the past several weeks I have been in the process of finding and purchasing an engagement ring (just the setting; I already have a diamond that I want to be set in the ring). I initially went to Ashby Jewelers to see how they could work with the design and price range I had in mind. The price they offered for the setting design that I wanted was much higher than I expected, so I continued my search and found a great setting at a great price (with the exact design I had in mind) at an online jewelry wholesaler. Before I purchased the setting (from the wholesaler), the manager at Ashby Jewelers (David Balboni) assured me that he would be able to set the diamond I already had in the setting I found online. So I purchased the setting, but when I went to back to Ashby Jewelers to get the dimensions of the diamond (so that the wholesaler could make the setting the right size for the diamond I have) the manager reneged on his assurance. He also refused to set the diamond in the setting I had purchased, and threw a bit of tantrum in front of me and my mother as we stood in the shop dumbfounded at his disgust in our choice to look elsewhere for a setting. It was unexpected and very unprofessional. Luckily, the online wholesaler was more than accommodating and I was actually able to save quite a bit of money by sending off the diamond I already had to the wholesaler so that they could make a perfect match with the setting. In my opinion business is business, and Ashby Jewelers refused my business to take the measurements of my diamond and to set the diamond in the setting I had chosen. I dont have much money and I wanted to get the most bang for my buck, but the individuals at Ashby Jewelers seemed to resent me for that. So they childishly refused my business. I would not recommend Ashby Jewelers to anyone, as it seems they have no sense of professional courtesy or what the notion of capitalism envelops.
