This place is amazing. My family and I eat here on a weekly basis. Sometimes more often. The staff is always very friendly and welcoming. Throughout the course of our meal it is not uncommon to have at least 3 different waiters come by our table multiple times to say "hola" to my 4 year old son and try to teach him a new word in spanish. We have tried several things and pretty well found our favorites, although we do venture out and try different menu items from time to time. Everything we've tried has been delicious and hot. And the Queso is to die for. I am constantly recommending El Mexicano to people. Keep in mind this is more like True Mexican food, not Tex-Mex. Not Americanized. Try it. You won't regret it. Just writing this has made me hungry. Think I'll go grab some food and a few cervezas. Adios.
I ate here for lunch on May 11, 2011. My husband and I had high hopes for this place when we first walked in: the decor is very cheerful and welcoming, and it smelled like good food was cooking. This is where our experience led into the Twilight Zone realm of eateries. The service was terrible. From the moment we were gestured to our table to the time we settled the bill, not a smile was to be seen on any of the staff and less than 10 words were spoken to us. No "Thank you", "Good afternoon", no politeness whatsoever. Very strange---I have never eaten at such a rude or depressing establishment. I ordered the tacos al carbon lunch special with beans. The grilled beef was overcooked, chewy, flavorless, and was only topped with an overwhelming amount of sour cream and a sprinkling of cheese. Unappetizing. The beans were equally disappointing---the flavor reminiscent of dirt. My husband and I decided to settle up after 4 bites of food and go to the Taco Bell a couple of miles back---it was much better than El Mexicano! Do yourself a favor and avoid this place. There are much better options for good Mexican on the West Bank.
