- Through Baptist Hospital East’s Multidisciplinary Lung Care Clinic, surgeons collaborate with a team of specialists that includes: * Medical oncologists * Radiologists * Radiation oncologists * Pathologists * Pain management specialists * Nutritionists Surgeons assess each patient’s needs and choose the best approach, taking into account factors related to each individual’s particular condition, then a dedicated nurse navigator guides the patient through the treatment process. Surgery Thoracic Surgical Associates specializes in providing minimally invasive surgery, which allows patients to have a quicker recovery, shorter hospital stay, and return to normal activities sooner. It also results in less pain, little scarring and minimal blood loss. However, depending on a patient’s condition, doctors may find it necessary to perform other, more traditional surgical treatments. The following surgical procedures may be used during thoracic treatment: * Minimally invasive lung cancer surgery, also known as Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) * Lobectomy, pneumonectomy, segmentectomy (removal of part or all of the lung) * da Vinci robotic lung surgery * Electromagnetic navigation (superDimension inReach system), in addition to radio surgical marker placement * VATS surgery to remove the first rib for patients with thoracic outlet syndrome * Minimally invasive surgery for other conditions including collapsed lung (pneumothorax or pleural effusions); fluid buildup in the chest cavity (pleurodesis); fluid buildup around the heart (pericardiectomy); absesses or infections in the area between the lungs and the chest wall (empyema); and pneumonia * Endobronchial stent placement * Repair rib and sternal fractures * Hiatal and paraesophageal hernia repair * Minimally invasive surgery to dilate the esophagus in patients with achalasia * Sympathectomy, a minimally invasive surgery for hyperhydrosis

With more than 30 years’ combined experience, the surgeons specialize in minimally invasive surgical techniques such as video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) and da Vinci robotic surgery for lung cancer, in addition to sophisticated diagnostic tools such as electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy. As part of Baptist Surgical Associates, the physicians of Thoracic Surgical Specialists work with a team of healthcare providers to develop a comprehensive, personalized plan for each patient’s diagnosis, surgery and treatment. This affiliation with Baptist Health allows the doctors to provide the support of a network of oncology specialists that includes a dedicated nurse navigator and experts in the Multidisciplinary Lung Care Clinic.
