- Traffic ViolationsFirst, being arrested for a misdemeanor or felony is a far more serious violation than a traffic ticket, which is an infraction. All of these offenses carry the possibility of jail time and substantial fines, probation, treatment programs and many other possible consequences.

- MisdemeanorsCalifornia law allows for certain offenses to be prosecuted as either misdemeanors or felonies. These types of crimes are termed “wobblers” because they wobble between these two categories of offenses. How the prosecutor handles a wobbler depends on the specific facts of the case and whether you have a criminal history. For example, if you have a prior record of theft and commit a misdemeanor petty theft crime, the prosecution may charge you with a felony because of your prior record. Under California law, a "wobbler" is presumed to be a felony crime and remains a felony unless the prosecutor exercises discretion to make the crime a misdemeanor.

- MurderFor example, a person who has been charged with murder will be taken into custody and housed in County Jail. He attends a bail hearing and no bail is set, which means he will have to remain in custody because he is either a flight risk, or a harm to society, or both. During the course of his trial he remains in County Jail. He is later convicted and sentenced to 25 years to life in Prison. Then he will be transferred to State Prison to serve his penalty.
- Juvenile CrimesThe juvenile justice system is based on the adult criminal justice system in that both systems are designed to protect society and hold accountable those who break the law. Juvenile law previously took into account the theory that a child under the age of 18 inevitably makes mistakes and should not be punished like an adult. However, the law has changed. Today, if they are accused of committing certain types of serious crimes, youthful offenders may be charged and prosecuted as adults. If a juvenile commits a more violent offense such as murder, the prosecutor may seek to have the juvenile tried as an adult.
- Probation ViolationThe option for a diversion program is only available to certain people that qualify. It is mostly available to first time offenders who are being charged with non violent misdemeanors. Qualifying candidate may also not have a record of probation violations or a failure to appear. Additionally, if they were previously enrolled in a diversion program and failed to complete it, the prosecutor and Judge may not be willing to allow the person to enroll a second time.
- Identity TheftIdentity theft is a growing crime in the United States in which someone obtains personal information, such as a social security number, and uses that information fraudulently for gain. A conviction on charges relating to identity theft can carry severe penalties. Posing as another person for any fraudulent purpose can lead to probation and substantial fines, as well as possible jail time. Unfortunately, victims of identity theft are left to clean up the mess and try to restore their good name and reputation.
- HomicideHouse arrest is available in cases where the person requires minimum security, is a low risk and non-violent. As mentioned before, it would not be an option in cases where the sentence involves extensive jail time, which is often in violent cases such as homicide. A person who is granted the option to serve their sentence under house arrest is confined to their residence under strict conditions. The house arrest will restrict their freedom and lifestyle, but it will allow them to complete their obligations to the government in the comfort of their own home. House arrest, does in many situations allow for a person to continue working and attend other obligations that are vital to their life.
